Why are metal railings so popular?
You may be thinking about adding a deck for the first time in 20+ years. 20-30 years ago almost all decks were built strictly out of wood. Since then, metal railings have become more and more popular. In addition to the clean, elegant look they can add to your deck, there are quite a few other reasons behind their popularity.
Over time, I have seen that metal railings will save you money in maintenance, repairs, and headaches.
When sitting on the deck often times you want to enjoy the view (well most of the time unless you have one of "those" neighbors). Metal railings are typically built using thinner balusters than used on wood railings. This allows for a less obstructed view. Many companies also offer cable and glass railing options.
Low Maintenance and a huge time saver
Once installed, a railing built entirely of metal will not require sanding and staining as is needed with a wood railing. This can save you a ton time. Just think, if you have to sand and stain in and around all of those spindles, corners, nooks and crannies...now that I described it you probably get my drift.
Many railing companies offer a warranty on their railings that cover the finish of the product. These railings are often powder coated which means they will hold up well to the exposure and elements of nature.
The possibilities are almost endless. Many railing companies offer inspiration ideas which show the different sizes, shapes, and colors available in their railings.
Consider the Functionality
One thing to consider, especially if you like to entertain, is consider the functionality of your railing system. Many people are putting in what is referred to as a “cocktail railing.” This design uses a deck board as a top rail to create a flat surface ledge at just the right height for holding drinks and plates. By using boards that match the decking, you can achieve a look that perfectly complements your home’s deck, while making great use of space.
As one of the most visible elements of a deck, the railing serves an important aesthetic and structural role — adding support, safety and style. When thinking about hiring a deck contractor, think about what you might want in terms of a railing system. Do your research and find pictures that you like. Then when it comes time to pull the trigger you can better communicate your dreams and desires to your deck contractor.
